Simple Steps To Choose A guiding Word For The Year
  • Twitter

Happy New Year beautiful lady!

Can you believe we’re one week into 2019 already?  Time seems to be going at an insane speed these days, right?  I’m heading into my second year of business as a graphic designer, and I have a whole heap I want to accomplish, I’m sure you’re the same. In this post I’m going to take you through the process I use for choosing a guiding word for the year.

What is a Guiding Word?

So, a guiding word is basically your main theme for the year, it’s there to help guide you in the direction you want to be heading, so you can stay on track.  If you’re anything like me, you get distracted by “all the things” all the time… so having a word that you can refer back to, can be really helpful.

It’s also a whole heap more flexible than setting yourself a new years resolution, you can’t really fail, you have the whole year to keep trying to bring more (…insert your word here…) into your life.

This is a very personal exercise, only you can really decide on your guiding word, there is only one really hard and fast rule to stick by… your word should be positive!

It should remind you of your purpose and overarching goals for the year,  what will drive you forward?

What do You Want More of in Your Life or Business?

Think over your past year…

  • What worked well for you?
  • What didn’t work out so great?
  • What do you want to bring more of into your life?
  • What do you want to let go of?
  • How do you want to feel?

When you think over the past year, is there something that kept cropping up?

List it Out

Spend 5 or 10 minutes, putting pen to paper, thinking of some possible words that resonate with you.  Once you have them in front of you, read through them, reflect on them, why are they on your list?

Sure you’re going to have a connection to all of them, that’s why they’re written down in the first place, but there will, most likely, be one that jumps out more than the others…

…that should be your word for the year.

Visual Reminders

Once you’ve chosen your word, write it down and pin it up or create a print in a gorgeous type, and put it somewhere you can see it daily.

Your phone or desktop wallpaper would be perfect visual reminders too!

Every time you see that word it should give you a little push in the right direction and remind you of your goal.

My Word for 2019

This year I have chosen FOCUS as my word, it came really quickly to me, as it is something I tend to struggle with.  I have so many ideas, I’m always starting something, I have so many ideas, I just need to stop and actually focus on the task or project at hand until it’s finished.

But, you know I feel positive about having it as my guide this year, I’m holding myself accountable to my word, and it will always be there as a gentle reminder.

Have you chosen a guiding word yet?  Let me know in the comments.
